Providence Sister Mary Richard Griffith was a teacher, principal

Providence Sister Mary Richard Griffith died on Oct. 18 at Mother Theodore Hall at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods. She was 94.

The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Oct. 21 at the Church of the Immaculate Conception at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods. Burial followed at the sisters’ cemetery.

The former Mary Catherine Griffith was born on March 16, 1915, in Fort Wayne, Ind.

She entered the congregation of the Sisters of Providence on July 19, 1934, and professed first vows on Jan. 23, 1937, and final vows on Aug. 15, 1942.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in education at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College.

During 75 years as a sister, she was a teacher and principal for 36 years at Catholic schools in Indiana, Illinois, Missouri and Massachusetts.

In the archdiocese, Sister Mary Richard taught in Indianapolis at the former Cathedral Grade School from 1942-43, St. Andrew School from 1954-55, St. Philip Neri School from 1955-56, St. Joan of Arc School from 1958-59 and the former Ladywood-St. Agnes School from 1972-76.

In 1973, she retired from teaching, but ministered in education as a support staff member.

She retired in 1988, and was active in volunteer service.

Sister Mary Richard returned to the motherhouse in 1991, where she volunteered for the congregation.

In 2001, she dedicated herself to the ministry of prayer full-time with the senior sisters.

Surviving are a sister, Virginia Hannum of Fort Wayne, Ind., and three brothers, Donald Griffith of Fort Wayne, James Griffith of Fort Wayne and Laurence Griffith of Syracuse.
